Bob's Basement and Contractor Advice!!

1) ALWAYS DEAL WITH A LICENSED CONTRACTOR

Always verify the reg # with nj  department of community affairs to see if the contractor is registered. We provided a link above to the websites page. Check the date the company was registered . Registration began in 2006. Recently registered contractors may be a red flag as many contractors have gone out of business and then re registered under another name. We have been registered under Robert Cipolla since 2006.

2) CHECK FOR ONLINE or BBB COMPLAINTS

Check with the better business bureau to see if there are any complaints, and if so, how they were resolved.  Even if a contractor is not affiliated with the bbb the bbb will still have a record of any complaints. We have never had a complaint filed against us.

3) ASK FOR REFERANCES

Ask the contractor for names, addresses and phone numbers of at least 3 references. At least one should be a job completed at least 3 years ago. One should be a job in progress.

4) ASK TO SEE AN ACTUAL BASEMENT

Arrange with the contractor to visit some of his jobs in progress and jobs completed. We will be happy to take you to any of our jobs.

5) ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT PAPERWORK

Make sure the contractor is applying for all permits in his name. A contractor should never ask a homeowner to take out the permit . It is illegal for both the contractor and the homeowner to do so with fines up to $10,000 . Plumbers and electricians also have to be licensed.

6) ASK ABOUT THE PAYMENT SCHEDULE

Ask the contractor for a step by step payment schedule. It is illegal for a contractor to take full payment before the job has passed all final inspections. We will never ask you for the balance until the inspections have passed.

7) ASK HOW LONG THE PROJECT WILL TAKE?

Although many factors can affect the time it takes to do a job it is advisable to ask for a start date and a realistic completion date. No one can remodel a basement in 2 weeks. It simply is not realistic. After permits are issued, a basement remodel can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 12 weeks from start to finish, depending on township inspection schedules and what exactly is being done in the basement.

8) WHEN GETTING ESTIMATES...COMPARE THEM!

Get several estimates and compare apples to apples. Most times a low ball price has many exclusions that you may end up paying for in the end.

9) MAKE SURE YOU DEAL WITH A BASEMENT SPECIALIST

Basement projects are different from other home improvement projects. They require planning, experience, proper communication and timing. A basement specialist will know how to properly plan the project to make it less stressful on all parties involved. A basement specialist should also have knowledge of township code's and procedures.

10) UNDERSTAND "THE OUTSOURCE"

Generally when you have a basement company that comes in with a very low estimate compared to others, the reason is often because they outsource the entire project. By outsourcing the project they will use cheap labor to complete your project as well as several different licensed and UNlicensed sub contractors to do the work. The problem with this is it takes much longer to complete a project when you have to wait for different subs to come in and do the work and the quality of the work will be sub par.

11) YOU HAVE TO FEEL COMFORTABLE

Taking in all these factors above, in the end you still have to feel comfortable with the contractor that you hire. If you feel uncomfortable or have doubts regarding the contractors work and/or work ethic....it's in your best interest to STOP and reevaluate your options before making that decision. We value our relationships built with our clients and want you to know you are in good hands with our company.....we are a family basement company and have been for over 42 Years!!
